On 26 September 2016, presidential candidates Hillary Clinton (Democrat) and Donald Trump (Republican) took to television for their first debate. Here are the major highlights of that night;

Trump and Women

Clinton made it very obvious that voting for Trump should not be an option for women. When Trump made comments about Clinton not having the “look” or “stamina” to be president, Clinton fired back with a ghost from Trump’s past. The Miss Universe winner of 1996, who was called names like Miss Piggy and Miss Housekeeping was brought to the audience’s attention by Clinton. Clinton was pointing out how no one should vote for someone who calls people names based off their looks and background.

Show Us Your Taxes

Clinton repeatedly brought up the fact that Donald Trump has not paid his taxes. And Trump took the bait. He stated that avoiding paying his taxes made him smart. Trump is a businessman, but how successful is he? If he is avoiding paying taxes I think it is made clear. Many of Trump’s businesses have failed in fact, and Trump is in deep debt. Clinton brought to light how morally corrupt Trump is and how little he values American laws. Interestingly enough Trumps tax returns were released soon after the debate.

Super Fact Checker

Lester Holt was the man of the hour. There was a lot of worrying about any fact checking occurring during the debate. There wasn’t much of any, except where it mattered. Holt pointed out to Trump where he denied defending the invasion of Iraq. Trump took the bait again. He traded businessman for two year old and simply stated “You’re wrong” when Holt attempted to correct the businessman. He threw a tantrum and would not let the conversation continue. Trump is now becoming known for flip-flopping on issues.

During the presidential race and even prior, Trump has often shown his true colors when it comes to race relations. It began in 2008 when President Obama was running for president. Trump could not believe a black man had such an opportunity, and then won. He demanded to see Obama’s birth certificate and was seeking to discredit the credentials of the rightfully elected president of the United States of America.

Clinton Hidden Move: Trump’s Famous Feuds

Trump has been involved in show business a long time. That has led to many celebrity encounters and eventually fallouts. One infamous battle was with Rosie O’Donnell, which is still raging now.

When Clinton brought up how sexist, racist, and shaming Trump had been towards the former Miss Universe winner, Trump’s retort was again that of a two year old. Trump played victim and said “Somebody who has been very vicious to me, Rosie O’Donnell, I said very tough things to her and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her,” Trump has consistently called O’Donnell “fat” and a “slob”. At the debate that night it was made clear that Trump’s other form is that of a sexist.

Overall, Clinton did very well at playing Trump’s game. She did not let him get under skin and always had a comeback. Trump was correct when he stated Clinton had been preparing to be president. Round one goes to Clinton.
