Oprah Winfrey is a figure many people look up to. From television to movies and books, Oprah is everywhere. Many of her followers live by her words and are inspired by her actions. Oprah is someone with power, but should another celebrity be taken into consideration for a political office?

The Golden Globes premiered January 7th 2018, and it was a night for many to make their voices heard. The #MeToo  and Times Up movements were the main topics at the ceremony. With celebrities dressed all black in support of women making waves, and those who have faced horrific events. Oprah received the Cecil B. Demille award, and gave a speech that sounded almost presidential. “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room is celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story.”

And there was a reason for that. CNN has stated that two anonymous sources who are confidantes of Oprah’s, have been urging her to run for months. And Iowa’s state director for Barack Obama’s reelection; Brad Anderson tweeted “Call me Oprah. I’ve got some Iowa county chairs who would love to hear from you.” Right now Oprah herself has not stated any intention to run, but everyone else seems to have an opinion on her doing so.

There are some reasons why Oprah should run and how she would be successful. “While she lacks experience in politics, her career trajectory demonstrates that she is an exceptionally talented individual with the ability to inspire, lead, and create, and change isn’t a bad thing to many voters on the left and right wing of the political spectrum.” She is an inspiring figure in the media and has enough philanthropic work under her belt that there is a case she would win an election.

There are also cases for why she should absolutely not run. “We need to end the political aspirations of celebrities and political neophytes. If Oprah Winfrey wants to run for office, let her start in Congress, as a representative, until she learns the legislative process. We are absolutely finished with putting beginners in the highest office in the land. You don’t go from zero to 100 just because you are a celebrity. Work your way up. We are finished handing you the keys to the kingdom because you’re a bit famous. The vanity campaigns by the rich and famous have to end before they’re even allowed to start.” This reaction is interesting in light of the fact that Donald Trump was lauded as being “anti-establishment” for running for president; as celebrity. Why is Oprah being treated differently?

It seems the whole country has an opinion. M-lifestyle put out a Twitter poll and fifty six percent of voters voted that Oprah should run for president in 2020. But does it match how the entire nation feels?

Either way, it seems people are on opposite ends of this debates and whether you are for or against Oprah running for president, it is clear that having some type of media influence has an impact on voting strength. This is evident in the choice of America’s current president and now  to future prospects.
