Brittni Brown, founder of The Bee Agency, takes the concept of “dressing for success” literally. Specializing in Fashion PR, Brown combines her business acumen with her passion for the fashion industry. The Bee Agency provides management and publicity for its clientele through public relations, client representation, and event coordination. Since its birth in 2011, The Bee Agency has since created a reliable network of clients in Detroit, Michigan- where it is based, and beyond.

“I am always checking my email, updating social media accounts for clients, and dealing with anything related to my work as a publicist.”

Brown’s success in the business of public relations was never anticipated. As an undergraduate at Eastern Michigan University, Brown originally studied secondary education. However, after co-founding Eastern Michigan University Fashion Week, Brown realized Public Relations was a much better fit. She switched her major to Communications, where she studied how to publicize, promote, and brand events.“I love talking to people,” she explains, “so I wanted to study the art of communicating with others.” After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Communications in 2013, Brown balances her PR work with The Bee Agency and her daytime job in the communication department at Quicken Loans. However, despite the challenges of time management, Brown is able to handle her responsibilities with her head (and heels) held high.

A typical day for Brown is always hectic so scheduling is key. Starting her day at 7:30am, Brown usually doesn’t catch a break until well into the evening. “I am always on my phone!” she explains. “I am always checking my email, updating social media accounts for clients, and dealing with anything related to my work as a publicist.” Aside from her work online, Brown is also responsible for creating press releases and media kits for her clients as well as scheduling airtime for press placements. After three years of working in the PR field, The Bee Agency’s clientele includes Tommy Walker, founder of Detroit vs. Everybody, and Janae Griggs of “I Am P.I.N.K”, a non-profit organization devoted to empowering young girls. On the weekends, Brown enjoys giving back to her community by volunteering at various events. “Giving back my time is downtime for me,” she says. As a genuinely “community service-oriented person”, Brown enjoys working with non-profits and helping them build their brand. In the midst of her hectic lifestyle, Brown stresses the importance of setting aside at least one hour for herself.

beeAs an African American female, the corporate world is often a harsh place. Brown emphasizes the importance of finding mentors who not only look like you, but are experienced in the field you want to get into. She also explains that getting hands-on experience is also key. “Studying PR will help you become knowledgeable in the field, but getting actual experience helps you decide if you’re ready or not.” For this reason, Brown advises aspiring publicists to get as much experience with internships as possible. Most importantly, however, for anyone who wants to be successful, be your own motivator. “Nobody will motivate you but yourself. You have to have tunnel vision when it comes to your goals”. As for the future of The Bee Agency, Brown expects her company to flourish and to continue helping others achieve the vision of their brand. “I want to help their names become a household name.” Her selfless dedication to helping others is the driving force behind her well-deserved success.
