Powerful. Noble. Hardworking. These three adjectives are a representation of Sabastine Eugene Arthur’s name. This is a  Ghanaian native who decided that he wanted to pursue an education in America, and that he did. He came to the United States and chased down his master’s degree head on, earning his degree in cell and molecular biology from University of Arkansas a little over a year ago. Not only did he study a challenging subject but he finished with an excellent  GPA. Arthur admitted that when he was looking at grad school’s he had no idea that he would end up at University of Arkansas, he just typed in “microbiology for US”, found a woman (Dr. Kristen Gibson) who was in that field and read her publications, this woman whom he randomly stumbled upon later became his research supervisor at University of Arkansas.

“One thing I won’t stop mentioning is God’s grace.” Arthur’s next step is to get his PhD. He planned to go to University of Maryland for the Public Health (Applied Environmental  Health)  PhD program. However, he has been accepted at the prestigious Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Arthur had previously applied for a scholarship called Cambridge Africa, but after applying for the scholarship, he stopped thinking about it because he never thought that he would get in. It wasn’t until one day when he received news that he can only describe as God’s grace, he had received a full scholarship to Cambridge. This exclusive scholarship is awarded to a mere 5 students from sub-Saharan Africa every year. In the selection process your academic achievements, research and its impact, and your research’s potential to impact Africa are all taken into consideration. This year’s recipients are from Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Somalia, and Arthur coming from the coast of Ghana.

This amazing opportunity secured by Arthur is not only monumental but it is also destined. Arthur recalls the last words that his mother said to him before she passed a few years ago, “she asked if I graduated with my PhD yet.” His mother is his driving force; though he knows that she is no longer physically here, he still plans to make her proud. And even though his research has been a source of frustration, he has continued to passionately persevere towards his goal. His particular area of research focuses on the human norovirus which Arthur attributes as the leading cause of food-borne illnesses globally. After gaining so much research experience in the United States, he plans to apply all he has learned  in the United Kingdom.

Arthur hopes that one day his research work will bear fruit and will impact the world, especially Africa. “People don’t realize how serious this illness is. The death rate in the U.S. alone is about 800 people per year; it usually kills young children and immunocompromised people.” Arthur looks forward to becoming a professor and having an active research lab, in this lab his main goal will be to help Africa. Arthur has shown great fortitude and determination throughout his academic career and those are qualities that every M-lifestyle reader can learn from and adopt.
